They used to say that the Church of England was the Tory party at prayer but I think that those days have moved on. We don’t really have a religious right wing in UK politics, apart from the Ulster Unionists I suppose. They are probably considered by most to be a bunch of anachronistic nutters. So why does the religious right wing in America have such an influence ?
To me this is a fascinating subject that I do find very hard to understand. First of all there is the incongruity of someone with religious beliefs holding right-wing political views. Most religions espouse compassion, charity, peace and love of mankind. Right wing politics is none of these.
Because of where I come from and my upbringing, the main exposure to religion that I’ve had in my life has been to Christianity. That doesn’t mean that any other religion isn’t worth commenting on. It’s just that I don’t feel qualified to do so. All I will say is that in my experience, and despite the fact that most claim to be the one true religion, they nearly all have such a lot in common with each other. One destination, many different paths.
Given that a large proportion of the religious right in America seem to be from, what they believe to be the Christian persuasion, I am going to restrict my comments to the Christian right.
Before we go any further I do realise that you can justify virtually anything by extracting one or several passages from the bible. I suppose this is hardly surprising, as it is a collection of writings from various cultures, taken from various points in history, by people of varying degrees of intelligence, try to explain their existence. It’s a work of philosophy that is basically all things to all men. So I don’t need a load of old bible bollocks masquerading as truth to justify right wing views.
It is my belief that if Jesus did exist, he was a socialist. What he appears to have preached is justice and equality for all, redistribution of wealth, comradely loving thin enemy (the first internationalist). Right wing politics seems to be the doctrine of the anti-Christ.
Is it just that the religious right fall into two categories; one – those with power that want to use it to control oppress others, and two those that are basically thick and want certainties in life to be able to cope ?
That’s how I see it or is there a point that I’m missing ?
Please tell me if I am. I’d love to know what makes them tick.
